The Fairtrade banana boat arrives in NZ!
At last it’s happening, thanks to everybody who has helped us campaign for Fairtrade bananas, they are finally here in New Zealand.
Fairtrade Certified bananas are being brought in from the El Guabo cooperative in Ecuador by a New Zealand owned company called All Good Organics.
Through Fairtrade, growers at El Guabo have already been able to invest projects for the community: in a medical clinic for workers and families, a retirement fund for growers and in education for local children.
Steve Knapp, Executive Director of Fairtrade Labelling ANZ is delighted at the news; “As one of the biggest banana eating nations [per capita] on the planet – the arrival of the first Fairtrade bananas in New Zealand is great news for consumers and the for growers at El Guabo”.
The bananas are currently only available in Auckland and we need your continued support to ensure the future of Fairtrade Certified bananas in New Zealand. We need you to make it clear to our local stores, regional managers and the supermarket CEOs that if you stock Fairtrade Certified bananas we will buy them – it’s as simple as that.
By doing so, we are not only supporting Fairtrade producers in Ecuador but we are sending a strong message that these bananas are not only unique - providing a platform for farmers to work their way out of poverty – but that they are our banana of choice.
